3 Best Books every Small Business Owner should read this Quarter

60 books a year! According to a recent survey by Fast Company, that is the number of books the average CEO reads in a year. The voracious need to read comes from CEOs consistently being eager to learn so that they can improve their performance, profits and workplaces to achieve success.

As you strive to advance yourself and your business, I recommend these three books for you to read this quarter:

1.     Profit First: Transform your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz

Accounting and entertaining are two words that typically do not go together. However, Mike Michalowicz masterfully brings these two concepts together for an exciting read. He suggests that business owners should change their thinking from the conventional accounting formula of Sales – Expenses = Profit, to a more behavioral approach of Sales – Profit = Expenses. He suggests this approach will help you elevate your cash management. Each chapter also includes actionable steps.

The best part of this book is how easy it is to read, and the practical advice from the author.

2.    Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits by Gregory Burgess Crabtree

If you want to understand accounting, without all the accounting jargon, this is the book for you. It is the right read if you have been struggling to understand your accounting numbers. He also goes straight to the point to reveal where you may be in error with your finances, and how to take decisive action for correction.

The author has more than 30 years of experience as an accountant. I enjoyed how easy this book was to understand.

3.    Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol Dweck

As a business owner, you may struggle with adjusting to change, especially around the changing business environment that came as a result of covid-19. Change is also difficult when you have had a successful method of always doing things, and feel there is no need to try something new. This book is also for you if you have this mindset.

In her book, Dr. Dweck reveals there are two types of mindset – the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. The growth mindset allows you to improve yourself each day, and become better at what you do. An excellent read if you need to understand how you can adopt a growth mindset – or reach your full potential.
